A Boynton Beach police officer was arrested Thursday after he allegedly raped a 20-year-old woman at gunpoint while he was on duty, police said.

Officer Stephen Maiorino, a seven-year veteran of the department, was charged with armed sexual battery, armed kidnapping and unlawful compensation or reward for official behavior, according to a statement from Boynton Beach Police.

Two weeks ago on Oct. 15, the department became aware of the allegations against Maiorino, according to the statement. He is accused of coercing the woman, who was a passenger in his patrol car, police said.

According to a source close to the investigation, the charges stemmed from an incident about two weeks ago. A woman was involved in a traffic situation and needed a ride.
While on duty, the officer drove the woman to a secluded area and sexually assaulted her at gunpoint, according to police.
Police say after the rape, Maiorino told the woman to get dressed and added that he would kill her and her family if she told anyone.
The police report said the officer used a condom but threw it out in the area where the incident happened and investigators were able to recover it.

“I would like to say that I am both disturbed and disgusted by the nature of the complaint, the findings of the investigation, and indded the very prospect that a law enforcement officer – someone ith whom the public should hold in the highest regard because the manner in which we safeguard public welfare – could possibly exploit this trust in such a vile and inexcusable way,” Katz said in a statement.

Maiorino has been on paid administrative leave since the night of the event. He turned himself in to the Palm Beach County Jail on Thursday.
