COLONIE, N.Y. (9 News) – A 28-year-old Breckenridge man was taken into custody Monday after 16 pounds and 11.55 ounces of marijuana wrapped as Christmas presents was delivered to his New York hotel room.

The package originated from Colorado.

Police were called Monday after U.S. Postal Service inspectors reported that a package that was supposed to be delivered to a person at the Desmond Hotel smelled like marijuana. Drug-sniffing dogs later confirmed this suspicion.

The offending package was divided into several smaller packages that were wrapped as Christmas presents, according to a news release from the Colonie Police Department. It was addressed to David Malchow, a Colorado man who had been in the Albany area for at least a week.

Malchow had a reservation at the hotel, and when he arrived later that evening, police say he was met with waiting investigators from the Colonie Police Department and USPS. He was taken into custody without incident.

Police say Malchow was also registered at a nearby Best Western Hotel.

Investigators conducted a search of his room, and while they say they did not find marijuana, they did find $4,200 in cash and financial records indicating deposits or money orders for an additional $5,500.

The marijuana that was supposed to be delivered to Malchow was valued at more than $64,000 – or $4,000 a pound – according to police.

Malchow is currently being held at the Albany County Correctional Facility without bail. He is charged with criminal possession of marijuana.
