UPDATE: Auburn Man Dies In Gun Battle

A man that barricaded himself inside his Auburn home on Sunday has died after firing over 100 rounds in a battle with police officers.

Placer County Sheriff’s office said that the house started burning several hours into the standoff.

Officers killed the man around 4 p.m.

Lt. John Poretti says that the man had been inside the home with his girlfriend when he became upset and attacked her with mace. She escaped the house uninjured.

He used a pistol, shot gun, and automatic weapon to shoot at officers and into homes nearby, Poretti said.

Auburn is located approximately 35 miles northeast of Sacramento.

AUBURN, California— A man barricaded himself inside a Northern California home on Sunday, firing over 100 rounds in an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement, authorities said.

The house started to burn several hours into the standoff, said Lt. John Poretti of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office, adding that neighbors of the Auburn-area home were being evacuated. He said smoke was coming from the home.

“He refuses to talk with us,” Poretti said. “We’ve shot tear gas into the building. He won’t come out.”

Residents called the sheriff’s office at 10:45 a.m. to report gunfire coming from the property, Poretti said. Officials did not immediately release his name, but he is described as a man in his 50s.

The man appears to be alone in the home, said Poretti. He said it was unclear what sparked the fire. “It’s more of a waiting game,” Poretti said.
