Several schools are taking care of students who were not able to go home before being caught in the winter weather.
175 students are sheltered at Clay-Chalkville High School and 125 students are at Clay-Chalkville Middle School. At Chalkville Elementary, 60 students remain. The students will be cared for by school faculty and will be fed, according to the Jeffco EMA.
In Bessemer, the Jeffco EMA says Western Hills Elementary has nine students that are still within the school. The cafeteria staff has left and we’re told they do not have access to food.
Inverness Elementary School Principal Christine Hoffman says there are still about 120 students at the school. The staff is prepared to stay overnight and they are getting ready for “pizza and movie night.” There has been a steady stream of parents coming to get kids.
Glen Iris Elementary in Birmingham had 29 students caught in the weather. Principal Mike Wilson says the student have enjoyed a nice dinner and will be kept safe overnight. 20 employees are also with the children.
Birmingham Mayor William Bell says around 1200 students will be staying overnight in Birmingham schools. He says the students will have access to food and water during their stay.
