On Thursday, May 22, 2014 at approximately 1340 hours police responded to an emotionally disturbed male on the Brooklyn Bridge, in the confines of the 84th Precinct. Upon arrival, members of the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit observed a male atop a metal stress beam on the Brooklyn-bound side of the bridge wearing duct tape and a mask over his face. The ESU officers donned rescue equipment — including harnesses and ropes — and climbed to the man’s location, facing the East River, approximately 20 feet above the vehicular roadway. From about 10 feet away, the officers took positions on opposite sides of the seated man and engaged him in approximately 20 minutes of intense conversation. Ultimately, the officers converged on the man and quickly secured him, preventing him from falling or jumping from the structure. The male was transported to Woodhull Hospital by EMS for psychological evaluation.
