Regina Zimmer bid $40.00 on an abandoned storage unit in Colfax, California, a Sacramento suburb hoping that the unit might contain a few items of value. All she was permitted to do before bidding on the storage space was look at the unit from the outside.

After going through the inside of the unit and finding a storage ottoman with its lid sealed with tape and “fragile” sticker affixed,  she said “had a feeling it wasn’t something good.”

“As soon as we opened it and took the lid off, it smelled really, really bad.”

Zimmer said upon opening the lid that there were trash bags and a toy stuffed animal, followed by a red sleeping bag with more bags inside.

“When we got down to something that looked like dried blood,” Zimmer told CNN, she, with the manager of the storage facility contacted the Placer County Sherriff’s Office and reported the discovery of what they believed to be ” the decomposing remains of a fetus or small infant.”

Deputies arrived to continue searching through the ottoman’s contents, pulling out a wet towel.

The bodies of two babies were found inside a storage unit in Placer County, California. Investigators are trying to find out how they got there and what happened to them.

“As he pulled [the towlel] out,” Zimmerman continued, “something came out with it. It was a little skull … You could see the hair, the jawbone. And at that time it became a crime scene.”

Investigators have questioned Zimmerman several times but have found no connection.

Placer County Sherriff’s Lt. John Poretti said that the department was “trying to determine the age of the fetus, if it was a viable fetus. Or if it was a possible miscarriage.”

Police report that detectives are interviewing a woman that is believed to be the mother, but charges against her are pending.

Zimmer, who said she has bid on storage lockers several times, said “this was the worst thing thing I have ever, ever found.”

“And it’s the saddest thing I’ve ever found.”
