In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15 falls, as National Police Week. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others. This year, Police Week runs from Sunday, May 10 to Saturday, May 16.
Among the many law enforcement officers from around the country being recognized this year for their service and sacrifice, the members of the NYPD include Dennis E Guerra, WenJian Liu, Rafael L Ramos, Michael C Williams, and Thomas K Choi.
A special tribute was made today in Times Square recognizing NYPD Police Officer Brian Moore who was shot in the line of duty on Saturday, May 2, 2015 and succumbed to his injuries two days later.

“I am proud to be part of this important tribute to honor all the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for the communities they served,” said Police Commissioner Bratton. “I would like to acknowledge those officers from our New York City community who are being honored this year, including Dennis E Guerra, WenJian Liu, Rafael L Ramos, Michael C Williams, and Thomas K Choi.  This campaign reflects the integrity, dignity, and pride these Americans displayed every day.”
