CHILLING AUIDO: Gunfire Heard On 911 Call As Man Fires At Police In Ca. -LISTEN

STOCKTON, California —

On March 4, 2015, at 1:47 pm, the Stockton Police Department received calls in regards to a man firing a gun into the air in the area Church Street and San Joaquin Street. While Officers were responding, callers were advising they could see the man outside firing the gun and the 911 operator could hear the gunshots over the phone.

As Officers arrived, one caller told the 911 operator that the suspect was firing at the Officers. The 911 operator could hear the gunshots over the phone and Officers were advising Dispatch they were being shot at.

Two Stockton Police Patrol Officers and one San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Deputy returned gunfire striking the suspect several times. The suspect fell down on the ground. Officers then formed an arrest team and approached the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody and transported by Medics to an area hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

During a preliminary search of the area, Officers located a handgun and a box of ammunition near the suspect. There were multiple bullet holes in a nearby business and a parked mail van located in the direction of gunfire from the suspect.

Suspect:

Carl Lao, a 28 year old man, resident of Stockton. Lao has prior arrests for battery.

Suspect’s Weapon Recovered: .25 caliber handgun.

Involved Officers who discharged their firearms:

SPD Officer Sean Konoske, hired in 2013, assigned to the Field Operations Division.

SPD Officer Vincent Perez, hired in 2013, assigned to the Field Operations Division.

San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Deputy Shawn Vargas, hired in 2008, assigned to the County Wide Gang Task Force.

The involved Officers and Deputy were uninjured and placed on a three day paid administrative leave.
