JAX Officer Shoots Suspect Multiple Times After Struggle Over Taser -ICYMI

    A Jacksonville Sheriff’s Officer was involved in a shooting this morning at an apartment complex on Jacksonville’s northwest side.

    PRESS RELEASE: Director Tom Hackney described the incident that began as a domestic battery call to police. Ofiicers responded to the call in the 5000 block of Cleveland Road. As the two officers arrived, one of them heard a commotion and observed the suspect strangulation a female inside of an apartment. Upon the officer engaging the suspect with a taser, the suspect complied with requests to release the victim.

    While attempting to arrest the suspect, he became non-compliant and began actively fighting with officers. The officers attempted to tase the suspect but the probes failed to make contact. The suspect managed to escape the apartment and fled on foot. While giving chase, the officers observed the suspect kick the door in of an apartment that was occupied by an unknown female and her three children. The officer continued to chase the suspect through that apartment and out the back door.

    Upon rounding a corner of the building, Officer Clifford Sames observed the suspect attempting to get into yet another apartment. Officer Sames deployed his taser once again at the suspect striking him, but to no affect. A struggle again ensued between the two and the suspect gained complete control of the officer’s taser.

    At this point, the suspect became armed and Officer Sames drew his firearm and shot the suspect multiple times until the suspect posed no further threat. Officer Sames called for rescue and immediately began attempting to tend to the suspect’s injuries.

    The suspect has been identified as Devanta Dejuan Jones (Black Male, 22 yoa).

    The investigation continued into this incident at the time of this writing. Further information will be released as it becomes available.
