MEXICO CITY — At least seven people have died after a gas truck explosion in Mexico City at a maternity and children’s hospital.

A spokeswoman for the city’s civil defense agency says three adults and one baby died. She’s not confirming a report of seven deaths.

Rescuers continued digging through the rubble even as smoke rose from remaining fires.

The explosion sent a column of smoke billowing over the area on the western edge of Mexico’s capital. Television images showed much of the hospital collapsed, with firefighters trying to extinguish fires

The mayor says the blast was apparently caused by a leak in the hose carrying gas from the truck to the hospital.

A witness says, “There was a super explosion and everything caught on fire.”
