INDIANAPOLIS –300 baby pigs died after a truck overturned on the west side of Indianapolis Thursday night.
The driver was carrying 2,000 pigs from North Carolina to Iowa and lost control of the truck.
Fire crews had to build corrals in the middle of the interstate to keep the pigs in while they rescued the others trapped in the overturned truck.
Pruitt said about 300 pigs suffocated and died because they were packed in the truck on top of each other.
As of 10 p.m., firefighters are still in the process of transferring the pigs from the crash scene to the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
The driver was not injured.
